Truxton at 20 Years: A Big Deal or Not?

I’ve been trying to decide whether 20 years is significant or not. There are reasons for wanting the answer to be yes or no. When we opened the doors for business on August 30, 2004, I was 34 years old. Nick Saban hadn’t yet arrived at the University of Alabama where he’d later become the most tenured coach in the SEC and has since retired. The iPhone hadn’t been invented and no one had ever heard of an Ice Bucket Challenge. There were no public companies with a market value of $1 Trillion, now there are six. There have been about 500 bank failures, the disastrous BP oil spill, and of course, COVID-19. Yet now we don’t have to memorize anyone’s phone number or go to Blockbuster.

Begrudgingly, I will concede that twenty years is a big deal. Many consider it to be a generation. I’m certain Isaac’s son Jacob felt it significant as he worked faithfully for twenty years for his wives and property. About half of marriages make it to twenty years once they’ve made it to ten years. Over 80% of businesses fail before the two-decade mark.

Before Truxton I had been very fortunate to have had wonderful experiences on active duty for six years and at SunTrust for a similar amount of time post law school. Nonetheless, the journey of starting a business from scratch has been an extraordinary and unique blessing. The relationships that emerge from building a team and serving clients are uniquely special. Thank you to colleagues past and present and to our precious clients for making these twenty years significant in all the ways that matter.
